Manufacturer Ratings

Some safe manufacturers choose to  conduct their own testing and issue their own ratings as an alternative to those done by organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories. These manufacturer certifications can be done at a much lower cost and be conducted faster than having a 3rd party do the testing. Additionally, manufacturer’s tests will usually be at par and may sometimes have higher standards than that of Underwriters Laboratories, the industry standard in safe testing.

The result of these manufacturer tests is that safe ratings can sometimes be inconsistent betweeen companies. The following is a list of some of the common manufacturer ratings in the safe industry:

  1. B – Rated
  2. C – Rated
    • Baseline home burglary safe with extra security features.
    • Minimum 1/2 inch body.
    • 1 inch door.
    • Must have locking device and relocker.
    • No testing done before rating given.
  3. ER Rated (E – Revised)
  4. E – Rated
    • Insurance rating with standards similar to UL TL-15 rated safes, but tested by manufacturer.
    • Normally has composite body.
    • Our safes for this rating: Super Tuff.
  5. F – Rated
  6. G & A – Rated
  7. Class 2
  8. Class 3
  9. Class 4
  10. Class 5
    • Insurance rating with standards similar to UL TRTL-60×6 rated safes, but tested by manufacturer.
    • True tool and torch resistance from all 6 sides.
    • Normally has 5″ composite body.
    • 2 hour fire rating.
    • Normally insurable for up to $1 000 000.
    • Includes UL Listed alarm.
